Sa passion pour la locomotion va le conduire inexorablement \u2013 via l\u2019\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 \u2013 vers sa rencontre d\u00e9cisive, le 3 septembre 1896, avec \u00c9mile Levassor, le plus c\u00e9l\u00e8bre constructeur d\u2019automobiles \u00e0 p\u00e9trole de l\u2019\u00e9poque.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pourtant les circonstances de la guerre de 1870 font de lui un militaire, mais un militaire particuli\u00e8rement atypique. Krebs se veut d\u2019abord scientifique et ses multiples communications \u00e0 l\u2019Acad\u00e9mie des sciences n\u2019ont d\u2019autre but que de soumettre le r\u00e9sultat de ses travaux \u00e0 ses pairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le 3 septembre 1896 c\u2019est comme \u00ab inventeur distingu\u00e9 \u00bb que le commandant Arthur Krebs, 46 ans, Major-ing\u00e9nieur aux Sapeurs-pompiers de Paris, bien prot\u00e9g\u00e9 par son brevet n\u00b0 256344 d\u2019embrayage \u00e9lectrique, se pr\u00e9sente en tenue de ville dans la cour de la c\u00e9l\u00e8bre usine au guidon de son automobile devant monsieur \u00c9mile Levassor, 53 ans, le ma\u00eetre des lieux. Entre l\u2019industriel visionnaire et le militaire inventeur, \u00e9galement froids mais passionn\u00e9s de technique, le courant passe tellement bien qu\u2019ils s\u2019entendent imm\u00e9diatement sur un tarif de licence exclusive du brevet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moins d\u2019un an plus tard, le mercredi 14 avril 1897, \u00c9mile Levassor s\u2019effondre sur sa planche \u00e0 dessin alors qu\u2019il travaillait sur les plans de l\u2019embrayage magn\u00e9tique de Krebs. Cette perte laisse Ren\u00e9 Panhard dans un profond d\u00e9sarroi; il transforme alors son association en soci\u00e9t\u00e9 anonyme et demande \u00e0 Arthur Krebs de prendre la direction technique de la Maison Panhard &amp; Levassor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>D\u00e8s son arriv\u00e9e le successeur de Levassor a pour mission de passer \u00e0 la dimension industrielle en doublant la production. Aussi la transition entre l\u2019ancien et le nouveau directeur fut-elle rude pour l\u2019ensemble du personnel. Si la page militaire de Krebs est d\u00e9finitivement tourn\u00e9e, il saura toutefois user de son appartenance pass\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019arm\u00e9e pour faire de Panhard &amp; Levassor l\u2019un de ses fournisseurs, dans les domaines de l\u2019automobilisme a\u00e9rien avec les moteurs de dirigeables, marin avec les moteurs de sous-marin et terrestre avec l\u2019automitrailleuse Genty et le tracteur d\u2019artillerie Ch\u00e2tillon-Panhard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arthur Krebs conservera toujours des relations privil\u00e9gi\u00e9es avec Ren\u00e9 Panhard.
